Towards energy neutrality: innovations and strategies for reducing the carbon footprint in wastewater treatment

As water experts and technicians know, in October 2022 the European Commission presented a proposal for a revision of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD), officially ratified by the European Council on 5 November 2024. This revision is designed to align the directive with the EU’s climate action, circular economy and pollution reduction goals.
In particular, the new directive is inspired by the European Climate Law, which aims to achieve EU climate neutrality by 2050 by setting an intermediate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Likewise, the UWWTD requires sewage treatment plants with a capacity of 10,000 A.E. or more to achieve energy neutrality by 2045, introducing progressive targets from 2030 onwards.
