Mechanical dehydration technologies

The presentation illustrates the mechanical dewatering technologies applied to sewage sludge treatment. The composition of the sludge and the distribution of water within it are analysed, highlighting the importance of reducing the water content to decrease transport and disposal costs, improve stability and increase the calorific value of the treated material.

The different technologies used are described, including centrifuges, filter presses, belt presses, screw presses and rotary presses, as well as innovative solutions such as electro-dehydration. For each system, operating principles, operating parameters and selection criteria are discussed in detail, highlighting advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, energy consumption, maintenance requirements and adaptability to the characteristics of the treated sludge.

Finally, a comparison of the various technologies is presented, analysing performance according to sludge type, operating costs and plant requirements. The objective is to identify the most effective and sustainable solution, optimising the dewatering process through the use of chemical additives and the control of operating parameters to improve the solids capture index and dry matter content in the dewatered sludge.
