Application examples - Petrochemical plants

The presentation illustrates the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants in the petrochemical sector. The complexity of wastewater sources, including process, cooling, meteoric, ground and sanitary waters is analysed, highlighting their chemical and physical characteristics and environmental criticalities.

The main design standards adopted in the industry, such as API, SNAM and ARAMCO, are presented, as well as the HazID, ENVID and HAZOP safety protocols, which are fundamental for the prevention of operational risks. The importance of integrated design, which considers spatial constraints, environmental impacts and current regulations, is explored.

The most widely used treatment technologies are analysed, including API and CPI separators, IGF and DAF floaters, carbon filters and advanced biological treatments. Particular attention is paid to the management of industrial sewage networks, the separation of water according to the type of contaminant and the choice of the best plant solutions to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

Finally, practical cases of petrochemical plants are illustrated, with examples of treatments for the removal of hydrocarbons, heavy metals and pollutants, emphasising the role of technological innovation to optimise performance and reduce environmental impact.
